1978 P 125x (177) Project

The Snoopy Racer is a project I've been wanting to do for a long, long time.  I have always loved Snoopy as the WWI flying Ace, and probably as a result of that, have always loved the Sopwith Camel.  The bike is pretty much what it was before the theme.  I stripped the entire bike down and over the course of 3 weeks I painted it with rattlecan.  The Olive Drab was a pain, because it's so damn hard to find.  I did have one interesting day in painting- it was so hot on the last day of paint, that it seemed that the paint was drying as it came out of the can.  It orange peeled horribly, but a quick wipe down took care of the worse of that. Since it's supposed to look like rough canvas anyway...  The only major modification I made was of the spare side cowl.  Since I got rid of the glove box for the spare and my bike is battery-less, I had a small oil and tool box where the battery had gone.  For this project, I moved all the electronics under the gas tank, removed the battery bracket, built a bottom for the cowl and cut a door into the top of it.  I used a piece of canvas that snaps to the cowl as a lid- very 1916.  The graphics on the cowls were all laid out over masking tape, and hand cut and painted.  The Snoopy on the front leg shield was painted by Bee.  I never found a photograph of yellow rims on a Sopwith Camel, but knew that's the way I wanted to go.  Added details include a wooden switch panel, filled indicator lights on the headset and covered turn indicator holes.  I also cut (badly) vents in the engine cowl to hopefully solve some heat issues I was having.  After paint was completed, I rebuilt the engine and changed all the cables.  The bike is still not running as well as before the clutch lock up, but it's getting better.
